7 Signs It's Time to Replace Your AC Unit (Not Just Repair It)

Every AC repair call involves the same question: is it worth fixing, or is it time for a new system? There's no universal answer — it depends on the age of your equipment, the cost of the repair, and how efficiently your current system runs.

Here are the seven signs we look for when advising customers on repair vs. replacement.

The average lifespan of a central AC system in South Florida is 12–15 years — shorter than the national average of 15–20 years because our systems run year-round rather than seasonally.

If your system is in this age range, it's not a question of if it will fail, but when. Investing in major repairs on aging equipment is often throwing good money after bad.

The rule of thumb: If the repair cost exceeds 50% of the cost of a new system, and your equipment is more than 10 years old, replacement is usually the smarter financial decision.

One repair is normal. Two repairs in a year is a warning sign. Three or more repairs in two years means your system is in a death spiral — components are failing in sequence as the equipment ages.

Keep a record of your repair costs. If you've spent $800 or more on repairs in the past two years on a system that's 10+ years old, that money would have been better applied toward a new installation.

AC systems lose efficiency as they age. A 10-year-old system running at 10 SEER costs significantly more to operate than a new 16–20 SEER system.

If your electric bills have increased noticeably over the past few years without a change in your usage habits, your aging system is likely the culprit. A new high-efficiency system can reduce your cooling costs by 30–50%.

If some rooms are comfortable while others are always too warm, the problem could be:

• An undersized system that was never properly sized for your home
• Duct leaks that are losing conditioned air before it reaches certain rooms
• A failing compressor that can no longer maintain adequate refrigerant pressure
• Zoning issues in a larger home

Sometimes duct repairs or a zoning system can solve this. But if the system is old and undersized, replacement with a properly sized unit is the right answer.

R-22 (Freon) was phased out of production in 2020 under EPA regulations due to its ozone-depleting properties. If your system still uses R-22:

• Refrigerant is now extremely expensive — often $100–$150 per pound
• Supply is limited and shrinking
• Any refrigerant leak becomes a very costly repair
• Technicians are increasingly unable to source R-22

If your system uses R-22 and has a refrigerant leak, replacement is almost always more cost-effective than recharging with R-22.

How to check: Look at the data plate on your outdoor condenser unit. It will list the refrigerant type. R-22 systems were typically installed before 2010.

The compressor is the heart of your AC system — it's what actually pumps refrigerant through the system to create cooling. A compressor replacement typically costs $1,200–$2,500.

On a system that's 10+ years old, replacing the compressor often doesn't make sense because:

• The rest of the system is equally aged and likely to fail soon
• A new compressor won't improve the efficiency of the old system
• You may not be able to find a compatible replacement compressor for older equipment

In most cases, a failed compressor on an older system is the right time to replace the entire unit.

Your AC does double duty in South Florida — it cools the air and removes humidity. A properly functioning system should maintain indoor humidity between 40–55%.

If your home feels clammy and humid even when the AC is running, it could mean:

• Your system is oversized (cools too quickly without running long enough to dehumidify)
• The evaporator coil is dirty or damaged
• Your system is aging and losing its dehumidification capacity

Persistent high humidity leads to mold growth, musty odors, and poor air quality. If your system can't maintain proper humidity levels, it's time to evaluate replacement.

A new system installation in South Florida typically includes:

• Proper load calculation (Manual J) to size the system correctly for your home
• Removal and disposal of your old equipment
• Installation of the new air handler and condenser
• Refrigerant line set inspection (replacement if needed)
• Electrical connections and disconnect box inspection
• Condensate drain installation and testing
• System startup and performance verification
• Thermostat installation (we recommend upgrading to a smart thermostat)
